Things to do on Anna Maria Island

  • Ride the Island Trolley to wherever you want to go on the island.
  • If you’re interested in learning more about sea turtles, contact Turtle Watch at 941-778-5638. They have nesting beach tours during the early mornings in June, July and August.  Reservations are necessary.
  • The Coquina BayWalk is located on the southern tip of the island, towards Longboat Key, on the bayside.  Afternoons are time to walk through the mangrove swamps, and to view all the wildlife.  It is best in fall or spring.
  • Besides Anna Maria Island’s own Island Players, there are many local museums and other cultural attractions in nearby Sarasota and St. Petersburg.  In Sarasota one can visit the Ringling Museum of Art, the spectacular Selby Gardens, Mote Marine Aquarium, the Asolo Theater for amazing performances, and the renowned Dali Museum.
  • If you are adventuresome, hire a boat and explore Egmont Key, an uninhabited island in the Gulf at the opening of Tampa Bay.  The island has completed relic walkways and building foundations left over from the turn of the century Spanish American War.  This island is a Florida Wildlife Refuge.
  • Though we tend to stay at the Sailfish for our meals, as who wants to leave the patio, there are many great places to eat on the island and nearby.  Some of our favorites are the Waterfront on the north end of the island for a nice evening out or the MarVista on the north end of Longboat Key where you can dine alfresco under mangrove trees.  If you’re looking for more casual fare, and more of the “old Florida” feel, have lunch at the Rod and Reel Pier at the north end of the island or at the Starfish Company in Cortez where you can eat on picnic tables at the dock with a view of mangrove islands and the local commercial fishing fleet.
  • There are many places on the island to rent boats, bicycles, kayaks, or if you’re up for a parasailing.
  • For more information regarding the island, check out the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce
  • We are also not far to make day trips to Tampa or Orlando, if you’re interested in visiting Busch Gardens, Disney World, or other theme parks.
